HISTORY AND MAIN ACTIVITIES OF NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA BY: LUISA FERNANDA MARTINEZ

This film board of Canada started in 1938, when tho Goverment of Canada invited John Grierson, a British documentary film pioneer who coined the very term “documentary”, to study the state of the government´s film production. After hat the Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau was created in September 1918 by an order in council as the Exhibits and Publicity Bureau and was renamed with the name of today. This had been the major Canadian film producer.

The report of Grierson was included in The National Film Act of 1939, and this gave way to the creation of the National Film Commission, it was then renamed “The National Film Board”.

In 1940 Canada was in war and the NFB launched its Canada Carries On series of morale boosting theatrical shorts. This led to the creation of The World in Action, which was more geared to international audiences. In this period, other NFB films were issued as newsreels, like The War Is Over (1945),intended for theatrical showings. These films were based on current news of the time and spoke of issues of war or contemporary culture of canada issues, because what was sought was the audience feel identified with what they saw.

90% of the workers of the NFB spoke English and there was a little part of them were French Canadian, this small group was in charge of French films but it was headed by an English-speaking, The NFB wanted to retain the French talent. In 1956 the NFB headquarters was moved to Mostreal to increase the popularity in the French population and that French cinema was more striking for French people. In 1964, a separate French production branch was finally established, with Bobet as one of its four initial executive producers. In the 1940s and early 50s, the NFB achieved employing producers called "travelers" who brought with them foreign films, to give more versatility to the cinema that was taking place.

With the creation of the Canadian Film Development Corporation in 1967, the mandate for the National Film Board was refined. The National Film Board since that time was responsible for and responsible for promoting the development of the film industry. In 1967 was the creation of the Challenge for Change to community media project that would develop the use of film and video as a tool for initiating social change.

The National Film Board produced several educational films in partnership with Parks Canada during the 1960s and 1970s, including Bill Schmalz's Bears and Man.
In 1970 the NFB began a process of opening of new centres of production of the film in cities across Canada, this was supported by the NFB producers, especially by Rex Tasker, who was named executive producer of the studio

In 2006 the NFB marked the anniversary number 65 of its animations Center, restoring the Norman McLaren classics and the release of DVD Norman McLaren - The Master's Edition box. The NFB budget has since been cut again. The six-storey John Grierson Building at its Montreal headquarters has been unused for several years.

In October 2009, the NFB released a free app for Apple's iPhone that would allow users to watch thousands of NFB films directly on their cell phones. In 2010, the NFB released an iPad version of their app that streams NFB films, many in high definition.

Beginning May 2, 2014, the NFB's 75th anniversary was marked by such events as the release of a series of commemorative stamps by Canada Post, and an NFB documentary about the film board's early years, entitled Shameless Propaganda.

Differences between arts of film “board” and “council” (Stephany Diaz Cartagena)

There are different organizations that primarily help promote the film industry in different parts of the world, but these are adapted two deferential terms, which make these create a different direction in the way they support the industry. These are divided into "council" and "board"
To start we must keep in mind that these are cinematographic organizations founded by different states, and although its functions and performances are very similar but each has different characteristics depending on whether they are board or council.

There are several organizations in the world, the most recognized organizations are: NFB (The National Film Board of Canada), Irish film board, UK film council. I will use as an examples the council British film and the Irish Film Board, and use them to compere the functions and the differences and similarities that the arts or films “council” and  ”board” organizations has, and how each one of them help in their ones countries the art not just on the film industry, but obviously mainly in this one.

The "council" film chiefly act as a link between the films made in this case in the UK and the rest of the world, promoting and supporting British films in the international market. This has a network of partners around the world to not only develop film projects if not also festivals, seminars, lectures, workshops and in the UK / European film weeks, multiple art festivals, etc. So, not only supports cinema, but also other art forms. But although they support the arts in the UK, these organizations do not invest in the development or production of films, or provide subsidies to allow directors to attend vocational training courses. For example the UK Film Council represents the UK as part of the European Film Promotion (EFP), a network of European agencies and export promotion to promote European cinema and the talent behind it worldwide. They provide pre-release services, in the case of the British film council, which supports at major film festivals, including Berlin, Cannes, Toronto and Sundance.
Organizations film "board" are national development agencies for films, television and animation industry and investment in talent, creativity and enterprise. In the case of the Irish Film Board, these supports writers, directors and production companies in the development, production and distribution of film projects, television and animation Irish, in order to promote and help develop the art. The IFB also supports and promotes Irish industry from major markets and festivals such as Sundance, Berlin, Toronto, Venice and Cannes. Also it promotes not only internal but also external investment for various projects, mainly cinematographic, but also other projects that are within the artistic field and help the development of culture and art in Ireland.
The agency offers a strategic vision for industry training through the screen Formation Ireland, so not only provides the money for the implementation of projects but also helps the realization of these are made under a plan and a strategy organized to the success of the projects.
Since now we can show that these two organizations or agencies support and promote the film industry, however they do it from different ways, but with some similar methods, especially can demonstrate the difference in the fact that the support IFB not only in industry person promoting their work, but also provides funding and support of the organization, so that manages to be getting wider, more recognized and successful day.

These organizations are created because of the consciousness that has in terms of economic power that this industry means for different countries, for example on the side of film british council:
- UK film contributes over £ 4.6 billion to UK GDP and supported over 117,000 jobs (up from 100,000 in 2009).

- The UK film industry employs almost 44,000 people directly (up from 36,000 in 2009)

- Films depicting the UK are responsible for generating around a 10th of overseas tourism revenues, estimating around £ 2.1 billion that of visitor spend a year is attributable to UK film. These are some of the economic points that the film industry brings to UK.

These are some of the economic points that the film industry brings to UK
And in the case of IFB:
And in the case of IFB
 - The overall figures for the industry show high production levels That continued through 2016 With production activity for the independent film, television drama and animation industry coming in at just under € 200 million.

- The Irish film industry employs some 6,000 FTE in Ireland and is estimated to be worth in excess of half a billion in turnover Annually.

The role of the Adult Film industry in format wars by Camilo Supelano

The role of adult films in format wars (VHS vs BETAMAX)

One of the most famous battle in media between two brands, was the confrontation of VHS (JCV) and Betamax (Sony), fighting for being the most popular and best format in the market.
All of this sounds interesant besides that we use and see this brands every day, but what if this war was decided for the adult film industrie? Sounds crazy but is not. In fact, in the recent days was the outcome between the actual format wars (Blu-Ray vs. HD/DVD) taking also Sony as the protagonist, was decided for the same industry before.

The war begins when the pornographic industry does not know for which of the common formats take for his market. Between the users, there are a rule called ‘The Rule of First Adopters’ and this is that, Supposedly, the first group of content providers to colonize a new medium once it becomes commercially viable will almost always be the producers of adult-oriented material, so that is pornography. It means that an alleged trend that predicts that the first group of content providers a new medium will almost always be the porn industry.

In the late 70s and early 80s had a general incognita on both sides. In one corner was the little guy known as Betamax, and in the other the big bad VHS. The arguments were polarized with the specifications and performance of the functioning, but clearly the Betamax was better quality than VHS. Sure in the beginning it was, but as the technology race for longer playing times on single tapes kicked in, the quality difference was arbitrary. There was a back-and-forth on the quality, but to tell the truth most consumers really didn't care that much. What people cared about most was the cost, and one that VHS was cheaper. Cheaper to mass produce, cheaper to sell, and therefore cheaper to buy.

One of the most important factor that decided the winner of this battle apart from of the past specs of both, was the duration. The VHS allowed to maintain a lot of information into the videocassette and the VHS does not; this was important because with the determination of adult film industry, the duration wrapping the core element of record long films and programs. We can see these differences in data, because in 1976 the whole market was completely dominated by Betamax, but three years later the sales of VHS duplicated it.

The format quality and performance did not matter to the adult film industry, because there are different external factors that made the decision clear. Starting with the surprising and denial judgment of Sony for pornography industries to do not allowed use the Betamax for adult film purposes. Apart of duration, as I told before, the big decision comes from the usability of people with the formats. The determination and the past factors did not was the element that made the decision, was the people and the percentage of the use as I told before too.

In 1984, just the 12% in the US continue using the Betamax, for his great performance possibly, but Betamax razed with the market and taking the rule of the First Adopters, we already know who the winner was, is not a decision from the industry or formats, the people have the power to choose which format has the best performance in price/output that can fill all needs.

The industry that move around 13 million of dollars per year, have the power of decided in an indirect way the predominant format, not just for the winning of VHS or Blu-ray nowadays, porn was the first to incorporate multimedia technologies in web, like Javascript and Flash, also the first service that allowed the pay through credit cards. Furthermore, brands like EAT24 destined the 100% of budget to accompany adult content. The courage of VHS to post in his covers, the images of the most important characters in the porn industry was determinant in the marketing of the product, because was the force that impulse the rotation and distribution of the videocassettes. Also the variety of the content for the little restriction made the big force to create the idea of the principal format.

Finaly, it is hard to believe the way how is defined by a mysterious or taboo film format but with a power without limits. We saw the influence not just with the victory with VHS against Betamax, now is the same and all the possibilities of innovation in many ideas and facilities that we see and use every time in the film, web or videogames that were born from porn. Does not matter the big specs of a physic format, all is decided since a lot of permissions and licenses that people can decided and the big percentage of people is consumer from adult films, so it is important for the brands have allied this big industry for all of his promotion and sales, without restrictions. This could be the lection that Sony learned from the loss with Betamax, because nowadays, the history is different, Blu-ray apparently winning the battle with the legendary HD/DVD, with a big factor that Sony modified this time allowing the adult films in his format for marketing around the world. The lesson should be learned.

Here is a short video from Dylan Dubeau explaining not just how the adult film industries affect the format wars, is the influence with everything of this film format.
