The Economic impact of the .jpeg technology (By Fernanda González)

In our daily lives, we have contact with .jpeg much as we imagine, some people are not interested and others notice it, but what is this format? Well, to understand it better, we can define it as a compression method, which is often regarded as a file format. It is also the format most common image used by digital cameras and other devices for image capture, along with JPG / JFIF, which is also another format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the World Wide Web.
Many people do not know the origin of this format and what it actually means, well, as such its origin comes from a committee that was built from the beginning by the merger of several groups in an attempt to share and develop their expertise in digital images. The original JPEG group was organized in 1986 and long ago the ISO had started its investigations about digital images. As is the case, this committee was called Joint Photographic Experts Group who managed to develop a standard compression and encoding files and still pictures, we know today as JPEG.
From the moment that appeared this format is one of the most used worldwide together with jpg, which certainly differ from their origins (JPEG = Mac) (JPG = PC or Windows), and sold to large companies as Microsoft, Mac, among others. Currently this is still the case, as found on their website https://jpeg.org we might look at the work and standards carried together with the explanation of how to participate, it means be part of them, there they offer multiple countries, the ability to work with their decoding them, editing and transforming JPEG files.
There is a little explanation about How JPEG works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gPHZEXoMKc

This format was extended rapidly and today to generate some "controversial" or, debates, as his war with formats like RAW / NEF on the use of certain applications and programs which defend these other formats by the so called quality that is increasingly has been improving in JPEG. In the meantime users’ claim that the format is not compatible with any edits made by them, since according to them, it does not have sufficient capacity to be fully effective these changes.

Today with the wide range of telecommunications, the JPEG format is part of the multi-media, in this case through images, these are transmitted by all kinds of pages, such as Google and many of the social networks like Facebook or Twitter, for which people share these images digitized very commonly in JPEG format, this can be found at the time to download an image, where according to whether the device will give us the option to save as JPEG or JPG, this is not a kind of work that realize with the organization, rather it is a type of interaction given by the vast number of users on the web.

This committee also has an area of ISO members, which have a standard ITU-T Rec T. 81. | ISO / IEC 10918-1 also known as the JPEG standard. t is considered to be one of the most successful media standards around. Every day billions of pictures captured by digital cameras and mobile phones are represented in this format. The JPEG specifications was published in 1992, the result of a joint initiative of the then ITU CCITT SG 8 and ISO/TC97/SC2/WG8 groups.
ITU-T and ISO/IEC have sustained a continued effort in the JPEG standard and have maintained the specification according to market needs. At its 57th meeting, JPEG has advanced ISO/IEC 10918-6 Application to printing systems to International Standard status. This new part to the original JPEG suite of standards addresses specific requirements of the printing industry and specifies a subset of features and application tools to aid in the interchange of images encoded according to the JPEG image coding standard (Rec. ITU-T T.81 | ISO/IEC 10918-1) for printing. Currently, JPEG explores possibilities extending its most successful standard for requirements of the 21st century and to enable functionalities such as lossless or high-dynamic range compression in a way that is backwards compatible to existing implementations.

Today the organization JPEG works to improve the privacy and security of their customers (member companies), is also concerned with improving the coding system lighter, less heavy images and even manages a system of Heating installations online to their standards, It is offering the public to evaluate its standards in the images of their experiments. In other words working to improve their market.
